This bistro and bar, owned by husband-and-wife team Emilio Figueroa and Gigi Zafero, is one of the most sought-after restaurants in Old San Juan. The Nuevo Latino cuisine blends traditional Puerto Rican cookery with Spanish, Taíno, and African influences. The restaurant is set in a stately 1902 building that was originally a hair-tonic factory. Today you’ll find a cheerful-looking dining room, where San Juan’s mayor and the governor of Puerto Rico can sometimes be spotted.

Festive Puerto Rican-style rehearsal dinner to include: Starters of Ham Croquettes with Pineapple Marmalade, White Corn Fritters with Melted Cheese Dip, Churrasco and Cheese Empanadillas, Fresh Ceviche Mahi Mahi with Veggie Chips, individually served Mixed Baby Greens, candied walnuts, fresh cheese, cherry tomatoes, tropical balsamic vinaigrette, and family style entrees of Bbq Chicken Skewers, Whole Roasted Pig – Lechon Asado, Arroz Mamposteado, Mofongo and Fresh Whole Fried Snapper. Homemade guava flan for dessert.

Beautiful San Juan

Nicole and I went to visit Puerto Rico last weekend, and I was pleasantly surprised. We arrived late on Friday night, took a quick cab to the hotel and walked into its beautiful lobby. We were greeted by the fantastic staff and had a great beach side room. Visiting a couple restaurants owned by our potential caterers in old town San Juan that night, we got a flavor for the foods we’ll all be enjoying for the wedding weekend. We also traveled to visit the various locations for wedding festivities and made sure to enjoy the accommodations at the hotel. The pool was fantastic, the water at the beach was sublime – clear and perfectly warm – and a run on Saturday morning down the beach was a perfect retreat from our groundhog days.

I think it’s easy to speak for Nicole as well as myself, we are definitely looking forward to spending good times again in Puerto Rico.

Two Happy Birthdays

June 3 marked Nicole’s birthday, and it was a two part celebration. Because we have the house share in East Hampton on the weekends, we made sure to celebrate with close friends in the city as well as with our friends on the weekend.

So, on Nicole’s actual birthday, 16 of us gathered at Giano in the lower east side for some very good old world and new world Italian eats. It was a comfortable night with a light drizzle, and we had the place essentially to ourselves. Seated in the front at a long stretch of tall tables, it would not have been complete without Nicole’s best friend Haydee (maid-of-honor), especially because she and Nicole share the exact same birthday!

On the weekend, those of us out in East Hampton went to the new “in” place for dinner… called Philippe. While Nicole and I have been to the NYC restaurant near my office, we thought it would be a fun place to hit for dinner. Not only did we try their specialty, the Peking Duck, but the 10 of us had an assortment of appetizers (various dumplings, spicy shrimp lettuce wraps) and entrees (spicy prawns, sweet & sour halibut). Nicole’s close college friend and bridesmaid, Wendy, came in from Detroit as well, and it was great to see the two of them have a blast together. After dinner, we went to a local place called Fiddler’s Cove. While this place was dead the week before, we were surprised when we arrived. A live band was rocking great dance music and we all had a fantastic time.

That’s right… we’re getting married. We’ve had an amazing run at life so far, gallivanting around together in our hometown of NYC, and also on many exciting trips around the world. Now, we’re planning our wedding together in San Juan, Puerto Rico… from our perspective a fitting place to share with you many of our favorite loves… travel, beaches, the ocean, sand in your feet, old world charm, dining and unique architecture, and above all else, one another.

This webpage will serve as a one stop shop for our wedding, the planning, updates and all the important details. We’ll try to post updates as frequently as possible, and also just our experiences about the whole preparatory process leading up to February 13, 2010.
